In many places there is excitement around the word ‘People’s Chancellor’. As such, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl wants to govern after the National Council elections. But this term is not entirely new.
Since Kickl named himself that, it has always been pointed out that the term is historically loaded because it comes from the Nazi era. A look at the newspaper archive reveals something astonishing: Kickl is not the first people’s chancellor.
Gusenbauer: “I see myself as a people’s chancellor”
Alfred Gusenbauer also called himself one of these. The day after his narrow victory over the ÖVP with 35.3 to 34.3 percent in October 2006, he said in the “Krone”: “I am different and I want to cultivate a different style. I see myself as a people’s chancellor.”
