ÖVP Secretary General Christian Stocker launches the next offensive against the city of Vienna. “Apparently money plays no role in the advertising expenditure of the city of Vienna. There is no other way to explain the enormously high amounts,” he criticized in a broadcast on Friday.
The city government spends more than five times as much per capita as the federal government. Stocker calculates: In the third quarter of 2022, the federal government spent 6.9 million euros on advertising – about 76 cents per capita. The city of Vienna, on the other hand, spends (without its holdings) 7.8 million euros – that is about 4 euros per Viennese.
‘Government participation NEOS changes nothing at all’
“With the advertising expenditures of the past quarter alone, the city of Vienna could have financed the construction of 115 social housing units of 50 square meters,” emphasizes Stocker. And added: “If advertisements cover the information needs of the population, there is nothing to argue with. On the contrary, they fulfill an important task. But if you take a closer look at the advertisements in the SPÖ stronghold of Vienna, you immediately see the high proportion of meaningless advertisements. The participation of the NEOS government has done absolutely nothing to change Vienna’s opaque advertising policy.”
Stocker also points out that Vienna clearly has the highest advertising expenditure in a comparison of the federal states. “Namely six times as high as the second-placed state.”
