The current figures: – Fewer asylum applications, more deportations

Date:

Asylum numbers are falling, but remain at a high level. As many new applications as deportations.

In May, 4,354 asylum applications were submitted in Austria, in May 2022 there were 6,030. In the whole of 2023, 17,988 asylum applications have been submitted so far, a decrease of about 20 percent compared to the first five months of the previous year. In a long-term comparison, however, the numbers are still relatively high.

Significantly fewer registrations for Corona
In May 2019 – before the corona pandemic – there were only 1,027 applications. The Ministry of the Interior attributes the current decline to four factors: on the one hand, consistent border controls and border area controls in Austria, on the other hand, the fight against people smuggling on routes abroad, for example by Austrian police officers in Serbia and Montenegro , and also on international cooperation, which marks the end of visa freedom for Indians and Tunisians in Serbia, and finally on speeding up procedures in this country.

At the end of April, 3,624 negative decisions had been taken in summary and accelerated procedures.

Nearly 5,000 people were deported
Most asylum applications were submitted by Syrian citizens (1408), followed by Afghans (717) and Moroccans (421). Since the beginning of the year, 4,831 people have left the country, about 26 percent more than in the same period last year. Half of the deportations were voluntary, the other half were carried out by force. According to the Interior Ministry, about 90 percent of deportees are young men and half have a criminal record.
