According to a recent survey, 52 percent of Austrians welcome the Schengen blockade by Romania and Bulgaria.
ÖVP Chancellor Karl Nehammer and ÖVP Interior Minister Gerhard Karner were widely criticized by politicians and the media for blocking Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen. However, the ÖVP’s position is likely to find wide support among the Austrian population.
52 percent approve the decision, only 34 percent reject it. This is evident from the current APA/ATV “Austria Trend”. The blockade found the greatest approval among FPÖ and ÖVP voters, each with more than 70 percent.
SPÖ and NEOS voters are also critical
Approval of the Schengen veto is also relatively high at around 40 percent among voters in the SPÖ and the liberal NEOS. Even among Green supporters, a quarter (24 percent) agree with the blockade of Austria.
The ÖVP rejects the Schengen extension because the system does not work.
