After a brutal fight in a bar in Schattendorf (district of Mattersburg in Burgenland) with two seriously injured, one of the victims died in hospital. Thomas Hoffmann (SPÖ), the mayor of the market town, sees this as a failure of the federal government: it does not take its responsibility seriously. “Nothing has been learned from this since 2015. No steps have been taken.”
“The incident deeply shocked our community,” said Mayor Thomas Hoffmann in an interview with krone.tv. For more than a year and a half, the Burgenland Social Democracy and Hans Peter Doskosil have been pointing out migration problems. “The voice of Burgenland is apparently not heard anywhere,” says Hoffmann.
No other region in Europe is confronted with as many border detentions as Burgenland. “Every week, residents of Burgenland in affected communities describe their fear of leaving home unaccompanied,” the concerned mayor said. Until recently, up to 600 arrests were recorded daily in Burgenland, now there are only 100 to 200. “It’s about a small winter break.”
Family father died after assault
The 42-year-old Burgenland, who suffered life-threatening injuries during a weekend in Schattendorf, has died. The victim is a father of two children from the community. He was out with his friends on Saturday and the group’s excursion ended at the restaurant on Sunday night. The scuffle broke out in front of the restaurant, although the exact course of events is still unclear, according to the public prosecutor. Information is also expected from the ordered autopsy.
18-year-old suspect arrested
The 18-year-old suspect was arrested Monday. At the first interrogation, the Syrian citizen, who lives in Neunkirchen in Lower Austria, did not confess. He was initially given a 14-day pre-trial detention – due to the risk of collusion and committing a crime, the prosecutor said. He is under investigation for intentionally inflicting serious bodily harm resulting in death.
