The refugee flow gives us a national peak in asylum applications before Christmas. In Lower Austria, provincial councilor Gottfried Waldhäusl is now vehemently pushing for solutions.
The predictions that more than 120,000 people will apply for asylum in Austria this year are not coming true. If you look at the 1,000 refugees per week at the moment, the number will probably be 112,000, up from 110,000 so far.
20,000 more than in the record year
“In the record refugee year 2015 there were 90,000 asylum applications, this year there are 20,000 more. As many as Schwechat has inhabitants,” grumbles asylum councilor Gottfried Waldhäusl, who does not stop pushing for solutions from the federal government. The PVV sees only ‘announcement policy’ in the black-green coalition and is still missing solutions that he has been asking for since the spring “It’s clearly a failure of this federal government,” he says.
rejection requested
In concrete terms, he wants asylum seekers to no longer be arrested at the border with other EU countries, but to be sent back. The border in Burgenland with Hungary is decisive here, because the neighboring EU state hardly allows asylum applications.
“All this is reminiscent of the Balkan route allegedly closed by Sebastian Kurz,” Waldhäusl rants, wanting to remain true to his difficult path to asylum in Lower Austria: “Those who love their country protect it. That’s exactly what I do.”
