Unpleasant truths – “Politicians must speak plainly”

War, inflation and climate crisis. The mood in the country at the turn of the year was anything but rosy. “You can’t always just say that everything is fine here,” says the political journalist from the “Krone”. “The prosperity we had in recent decades is now gone.” You have to recognize that times are getting tougher. “Politicians must speak plain language next year,” Vogl wishes. Many politicians would approach the issues in a very cryptic manner. Harder times are coming and you have to get that across to people.

Of course, addressing uncomfortable truths can cost votes. Surveys show that people in Austria currently do not trust politicians to solve the big problems. “It’s a difficult situation that is unlikely to help the two ruling parties get better polls,” Vogl said.
