US presidential candidate Kamala Harris has made rapid gains in the polls compared to Joe Biden. On Monday, she was still 1.5 percentage points ahead of right-wing populist Donald Trump.
At the time of his June 21 resignation, Biden still trailed Trump by 3.1 percentage points in the national average polls. In some states, Trump’s lead has now melted. RealClearPolling calculated an average lead for Harris of two percentage points in Michigan and one point in Wisconsin. She trails the Republican further in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia.
The race remains close
Overall, recent polls show the race between Trump and Democrat Harris remains close, something former US President Barack Obama warned of.
The election will not be decided by national results, but by those in individual U.S. states. In 2016, former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton received about 2.9 million more votes than Trump and still lost because she did not get ahead of him in so-called key states. In most states there are clear majorities.
Indirect voting system
In the American electoral system, the states send their electors to the body that ultimately chooses the new head of state. However, these are not distributed proportionally based on the vote share of the respective candidates. Instead, the winner gets all the electors. The election date is November 5.
