Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) received the Christmas carols in the Federal Chancellery on Monday. “The carols are ambassadors of cohesion and charity. Your visit is part of the beginning of the year, just as the Christmas tree is part of Christmas Eve,” the Chancellor stressed. The children of the parish of Maria-Drei-Kirche in Vienna-Landstrasse, dressed as the Three Kings, collect donations for those in need.
The visit took place in the context of the Epiphany campaign of the aid organization of the Catholic youth group. Jungeschar National President, Teresa Millesi, explains: “About 500 aid projects can be supported every year with donations from Austria. A focus this year is the provision of clean drinking water for livestock farmers in Northern Kenya.”
Livestock farmers were dramatically affected by drought
The financial donations are intended to enable access to education, clean drinking water and food. Pastoralists are being dramatically affected by droughts caused by climate change.
“Keeping a long tradition alive”
“Not only are these young people keeping a long tradition alive, they are also giving their time and effort helping people around the world to access food and clean drinking water,” Nehammer thanked the carolers and Millesi for their volunteer work.
As a symbolic gesture, the carols handed over not only fair trade products, but also a photograph of a family from Northern Kenya representing the people supported by the carol campaign.
About 85,000 children, 30,000 young people and adult helpers who collect money for people in need are participating in the Epiphany Action 2022 of the aid organization for Catholic youth. Worldwide, more than a million people are supported in 500 projects. Last year’s campaign raised 15.3 million euros across Austria.
