Staff discussion – ÖVP “is now worried” about popular SPÖ state councilor

Date:

A “Krone” report on alleged personnel plans in the SPÖ caused quite a stir. Subsequent speculation that SPÖ regional councilor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig could be replaced by ex-minister Ines Stilling after the state elections in Lower Austria is currently leading even the ÖVP into guesswork. . .

The times of political cooperation have passed since the beginning of the election campaign. Contrary to some opinions, it really existed. Examples include SPÖ Minister of Health Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig and ÖVP Vice President Stephan Pernkopf, who is responsible for the clinics. Together they ensured stable conditions, clear decisions and crisis-resistant communication during the pandemic. A circumstance that was also reflected in the confidence index for both. In a February 2022 NÖN survey of the values of Lower Austrian politicians, Pernkopf and Königsberger-Ludwig came second with 12 percent ex aequo each. Only head of state Johanna Mikl-Leitner led the way.

ÖVP is surprised
Then and now, Königsberger-Ludwig enjoys better values than SPÖ top candidate Franz Schnabl. It would be all the more surprising if the state council, the driving force of the party, had to resign after the elections. In an interview with the APA, Schnabl would not deny a “Krone” report, according to which former short-term secretary Ines Stilling would become governor after the election. The ÖVP now apparently assumes that Stilling could replace Königsberger-Ludwig. “We are surprised about the SPÖ staff talks, but we will not interfere,” says the People’s Party.

In the SPÖ headquarters one replies: “Our position has not changed in the last two days: We are pleased to have a capable comrade-in-arms in Ines Stilling who, as a former minister of the expert government of Bierlein, can demonstrate extensive know-how. Our committees decide who will ultimately be part of the SPÖ government team. The SPÖ NÖ has a large number of bright minds that qualify for this. I can say: Königsberger-Ludwig did an excellent job. We recommend the ÖVP to take care of their internal parts. According to our information, the rifts between the NÖAAB and the Lower Austrian Farmers’ Union are already so deep that it is not at all clear who will lead the VPNÖ government team after the elections.”
