Prison sentences demanded – Lower Austria convenes crisis summit against climate protests

Date:

The provincial governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP), stung a hornet’s nest when she called through “Krone” for harsher punishments against the increasingly radical climate protesters because they “could also acutely impede human rescue operations with their roadblocks”.

“It also concerns citizens who urgently need to go to the doctor and are dependent on the car for this,” said the ÖVP politician. In response to the escalating protests, which are being rejected by level-headed climate activists, Mikl-Leitner has convened a crisis summit for Tuesday with the police, fire brigade and Red Cross in St. Pölten.

Sanctions are not deterrent enough
The provincial head criticizes – also because of the damage to property caused by the recent paint spray attack on the mansion in Lower Austria – that the small sentences now imposed are not deterrent enough. In fact, if emergency medical transports are obstructed, they demand jail time.
