More than 20 kilometers – Handling Tyrolean truck blockades caused a mega traffic jam

Date:

The first day of the new year, when truck blockades were carried out on the border between Tyrol and Bavaria, led to a traffic jam of 21 kilometers in Germany. But that was just the beginning. At least 23 more block finishes are scheduled for the first half of the year alone.

“Due to the expected heavy traffic from Germany to Tyrol, the metering of trucks in Kufstein at the end of the Christmas holidays was absolutely necessary to ensure road safety and traffic flow on the Inntal Autobahn,” said Tyrolean Transport Councilor Renè Zumtobel. (SPÖ) to the APA. The expectation was also confirmed, “because there was already a lot of traffic in the Kufstein area in the early hours of the morning”.

21 km behind Bavaria
According to Zumtobel, 920 trucks passed through the checkpoint during the four-hour dosing. According to the CBP, the Tyrolean transit measure has led to a traffic jam of 21 kilometers in Germany. The traffic jam almost reached the Inntal triangle.

Early driving ban truck weekend
Incidentally, an early weekend driving ban for trucks has been in effect since last Saturday until March 11. This means that trucks are no longer allowed to rumble on the Inntalautobahn and the Brennerautobahn (A12 and A13) on Saturdays from 07:00. The weekend driving ban applies on Saturday from 3 p.m. to Sunday.

This so-called winter driving ban calendar has been issued to prevent heavy traffic from colliding with tourist traffic.

According to Zumtobel, 94 truck drivers ignored the driving ban on Saturday and therefore priority checks will be carried out on the coming Saturdays. “These figures show that the Tyrolean traffic measures are essential and also require appropriate control by the police,” he said.

Another transit record in Tyrol
In the summer, the Tyrolean state government had already defined the days when truck traffic at the border is only released in blocks. This applies to 24 days between January and June. The state government reserves the right to carry out additional block handling due to weather and natural events, accidents or urgent construction work.

Last week it was announced that a new transit record would be broken in 2022. 2.48 million trucks passed the Schönberg toll booth, which was 33,042 journeys or 1.35 percent more than in 2021, and the peak figures of 2019 were also slightly exceeded.
