The waves are rising – “climate chaos”: green youths attack Plakolm

Date:

The sharp criticism of youth state secretary Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) on the current climate protests has caused resentment within the Green Youth. “Climate chaos is mainly caused by the ÖVP, which has been blocking any effective climate protection for decades and is leading us full throttle towards climate collapse,” the federal leadership said on Thursday.

In an APA interview, Plakolm had sharply criticized the disruptive actions of the “Last Generation” organization. Their argument was that this behavior endangered public safety.

Many people who know how important measures are for climate protection would turn away from the climate movement by such actions.

“Consequences of the climate crisis are becoming increasingly clear to everyone”
This annoys the Green Youth: “Instead of criminalizing the protests of many young people who are rightly concerned about their future, the Secretary of State for Youth should advocate an end to the ongoing blockade of her own party,” says Birnbaumer.

The consequences of the climate crisis are being felt “more and more clearly” by everyone.

At the federal congress last weekend, the green youth had the motto “High time! For radical climate protection.” has worked intensively on this subject.

Gewessler sees disputes as more differentiated
Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) sees the dispute in a more differentiated way. When asked which side she was on, she said at a press conference on Thursday: “I’m on the side of climate protection.” She shares the concern that climate protection is essential for survival. When it comes to the activists’ approach, the question is “more complicated than for or against”.

She understands that the urgency of the climate crisis and a potential climate catastrophe can lead to fear and desperation and that people are standing up for their concerns, says Gewessler. “But I also understand people who have to cope with their daily lives, take their children to school and are angry that they are not getting anywhere.” Before her time in government, she herself had “found other forms of protest” and spoken to politicians, businesses and interest groups.

Gewessler considers the current legal arrangements for the procedure for climate adhesive campaigns to be sufficient. As long as the protest is peaceful and no one is harmed, this is civil disobedience. Where people are harmed, there must be consequences – but there are already appropriate laws for that.
