Environment and Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) expressed his skepticism on Monday about a complete ban on gas from Russia, as announced, for example, by the Baltic states. She would also keep her mouth shut in view of the images from Ukraine and the terrible war of aggression by Russian President Vladimir Putin, she emphasized. The dependence on imports of raw materials from Russia is now becoming more painfully conscious than ever before.
“Austria is disproportionately dependent on Russia’s natural gas supply,” she warned. The share is 80 percent, although this has not decreased in the past, but has increased. The starting situation is difficult, also because Austria has no access to the sea, for example for liquefied natural gas (LNG).
“Now it’s a matter of doing everything we can to make ourselves independent of Russian imports and, behind the conflict, of fossil fuels in general,” Gewessler said. The European Union has proposed a framework, namely to reduce dependency by 2027: “This only works in strong solidarity.”
