Meeting on Tuesday – Karner to talk about migration in Poland

Date:

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) is expected on Tuesday for a working visit to Poland. Meetings with his Polish counterpart Mariusz Kaminski and a working meeting with the new head of the EU border security agency Frontex, Hans Leijtens, are planned for Sunday, according to the ministry.

On Tuesday afternoon, a wreath will be laid at the monument “Heroes of the Ghetto” in Warsaw. After that, according to the broadcast, a visit to the memorial site of the Treblinka Nazi death camp is planned.

Poland has the largest number of refugees from Ukraine
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the talks will mainly focus on illegal migration, strengthening the protection of the EU’s external borders, but also on the challenges posed by Russia’s offensive war in Ukraine. With currently more than 1.5 million registered persons, Poland has received the lion’s share of war refugees from Ukraine. Talks are also underway about intensifying bilateral police cooperation.

“Poland is an important partner when it comes to security policy,” Karner stressed ahead of the visit. “The talks are aimed at strengthening the protection of the EU’s external borders and stepping up police cooperation.”

Border control as an ongoing problem
Last year, the Polish Border Guard registered significantly fewer illegal entry attempts at the border with Belarus than in 2021. Last summer, Poland completed the construction of the barrier at the border with Belarus. The Polish-Belarusian border is 418 kilometers long, of which 186 kilometers over land, the rest through lakes and rivers.
