EU border guards – Karner met with Frontex chief before visiting Bulgaria

Date:

It is another attempt to make the protection of the EU’s external borders more effective. Before Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (both ÖVP) travel to Bulgaria to inspect the border fence, a first visit to the new Frontex boss Hans Leijtens was on the agenda, who wants to reorganize the border security service and probably has similar ideas to Karner.

“Leijtens wants to put the executive character at the heart of Frontex. He also wants Frontex to carry out border controls on the Hungarian-Serbian border again,” says Karner. Another goal of Leijtens should be that Frontex receives clearer powers from the EU countries for border control. Karner: “To protect the border vigorously and consistently, that should be the goal – but of course according to human rights standards.”

Poles submit, Bulgarians must follow
This includes expanding border fences and procedures at the external borders with the right of refusal. “The Poles have built a high-tech border fence of 200 kilometers in six months.”

The protective wall against Belarus cost 350 million euros. Interior Minister Karner demands: “In Bulgaria, the fence still needs to be adjusted.”
