Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) shows a clear preference for a tripartite coalition of the SPÖ with NEOS and the Greens when it comes to the federal coalition. It would certainly be extremely difficult with the FPÖ as it is “now”, so his preference would be “obviously” red-green-pink. “Austria has deserved a new coalition,” he says.
With a view to health care reform, the current president of the LH conference is battling with the medical association. “The only reason the Medical Association has so much power is because we have given it so much federal power. Who says the Medical Association needs that kind of power. That needs to be eliminated,” says Doskozil – convinced that the health system needs to be “completely rethought.”
The central question is how Austria can keep expensively trained doctors here. For example, it would make sense to oblige medical students to stay in Austria for a certain period of time. The medical association is not necessary, he said given the expected resistance, “the federal government should finally be ready to regulate it by law”.
“No time” to discuss SPÖ leadership
The Burgenland governor shows restraint in Sunday’s “Kurier” on the issue of the SPÖ leadership. Of course, “the state of social democracy is currently not optimal if you look at the poll results”. But in view of the state elections in Lower Austria, Carinthia and Salzburg, now is “not the time to discuss it publicly”.
Doskozil does not expect any “immediate” effects on the federal government from the elections in Lower Austria, neither for the government nor for the SPÖ. “If so, the situation will come to a head, but there will be no changes,” he says – also considering that the SPÖ in Lower Austria could be overtaken by the FPÖ.
