Interview with the Delegate of the Spanish Government in Euskadi, Denis Itxaso, on January 23, 2023 on Radio Euskadi

Date:

The Spanish government delegate in Euskadi says the shelter they want to create in the old Arana clinic in Vitoria-Gasteiz is “the result of consensus” with the NGOs and is limited to the European model. He regrets that it “becomes an electoral issue” and advocates opening a “reflection”.

The Delegate of the Spanish Government in Euskadi, Denis Itxasohas ensured that the international shelter for refugees that the central executive wants to create in the old Arana clinic in Vitoria-Gasteiz is due to the current situation, in which there are not enough places to take care of all these people. “The occupancy rate of places for refugees in the Basque Country it’s almost fullwe need to weave an intermediate stage network to accommodate all people,” he argued.

In an interview for Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” program, Itxaso referred to the controversy surrounding the international center, a project that has been criticized by the Basque government and the opposition of the Basque Parliament. Given this, the delegate of the Spanish government has argued that the project is “fruit of consensus” with the main NGOs (essentially Cear Euskadi and the Red Cross) and that is enshrined in the European model that wants to be “more resilient” in the face of a “growing” refugee phenomenon.

In that sense, it has been requested what does the basque model consist of to which Vitoria-Gasteiz’s executive alludes. “Is it the Basque model to allow 250 places in an industrial warehouse in Irun? Is it the Basque model to continue depending on the solidarity of Basque families?” he wondered. As he has argued, it is “impracticable” for someone coming as a refugee to go directly to a home because these people need guidance, “a media service equipped and designed to achieve the ultimate goal, which is full autonomy and integration. In addition, he specified that the center will have 350 places, but that does not mean “all of them have to be filled”.

On the other hand, he lamented that this issue “has become a problem electoral and partisan” and it seems “irresponsible” for the statements of some leaders around it. “It seems that there has been an attempt to reflect in recent days and I would like to contribute to that,” he added.
