Rodolfo Ares, former interior minister of the Basque government, has passed away

He passed away in Bilbao at the age of 68.

Last Thursday, Rodolfo Ares, former interior minister of the Basque government, died in Bilbao at the age of 68, as reported by the PSE-EE.

The PSE-EE expressed its “immense pain” and gave his family “a very strong hug” in a short message published on social networks.

Born in 1954 in Galicia, he was a member of the Basque Parliament from 1994 to 2016 when he left his seat. During the government of Lehendakari Patxi López, he served as Interior Minister and was in office when ETA announced the final cessation of violence. His tenure was also marked by the death of Athletic Bilbao fan Iñigo Cabacas from a rubber ball thrown by the Ertzaintza.

In the beginning he was a councilor in the Bilbao City Council between 1983 and 1990 and that same year he held the post of First Lieutenant of General Deputy and Provincial Deputy for Urbanism and Environment in the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, a position he left a year later to to present his candidacy for mayor of Bilbao for the PSE-EE in the municipal elections.

During his time as a municipal socialist spokesman (1991-1994), he was one of the initiators of the creation of the Bilbao Ría 2000. In 1994 he was elected a Basque parliamentarian for the first time, serving as spokesperson for the Basque Socialist parliamentary group between 2000 and 2005 In 2008, the PSOE Congress elected him a member of the Federal Executive Commission.
