“Dude, what was he thinking?” This thought crossed the minds of many in Hollywood when news broke that the new president wanted to save the industry with a trio of aging stars. Because Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social that he wanted to send Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone to California as ‘special ambassadors’.
There was a lot of gossip on social media. The three were called “Grumpy Old Men”, in reference to the comedy “A Crazy Couple” by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
“Very disturbed place”
Trump wrote: “It is my honor to announce that I will be sending Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone as special envoys to a very troubled place, Hollywood, California. As my envoy’s plenipotentiary, you will work to get Hollywood back on track after losing so much business abroad over the past four years. HOLLYWOOD WILL BACK BIGGER, BETTER AND STRONGER THAN BEFORE!”
“My eyes and ears”
Trump added: “The three very talented people will be my eyes and ears. I will maintain what they propose. Just like in the United States of America, it will be the golden age of Hollywood!”
Why did Trump choose these three actors who were no longer completely fresh? They are among the few who openly support him in the film metropolis. Voight has been an avid Trump supporter since 2016. Angelina Jolie’s father called his idol the “best president since Abraham Lincoln” and portrayed Trump in his podcast as “God’s chosen one.” The 86-year-old also firmly believes that Biden stole the 2020 election.
“Citizen duty to help”
Stallone, 78, announced Trump as “the second George Washington” at the gala of the right-wing populist “America First Policy Institute” in November and then remained enthusiastic: “We are here in the presence of a truly mystical figure. No one in the world would have achieved what he achieved. I am completely overwhelmed.”
The ultra-conservative Gibson has made no secret of his hatred of Democratic politicians for years. The 69-year-old insulted Vice President Kamala Harris in October in front of the paparazzi cameras as “dumb as post” and revealed he wanted to vote for Trump. However, his new role as special ambassador to Hollywood for the new president came as a surprise to ‘Mad Max’, as he revealed to ‘Fox News Digital’: ‘I only found out through the tweet. But it is my civic duty to help and provide insider advice.”
Then he joked: “I hope the post comes with an ambassador’s home.” A reference to the fact that his Malibu mansion was destroyed by the fires last week – for which Gibson blames the Democratic Party and especially Governor Gavin Newsom.
“Is this real or an episode of The Simpsons?”
On social media, commenters alternated between amusement (“As if anyone in Hollywood would listen to these old dudes”) and dismay (“Just embarrassing”). Best comment on X in response to Trump’s announcement: “Is this real or an episode of The Simpsons?”
