The Corona advisory body Gecko is in favor of continued virus monitoring, even after Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) announced the withdrawal of the COVID-19 legislation before the middle of the year. According to Gecko, consideration should be given to including the pathogens of other respiratory infections (e.g. RSV, influenza) in the surveillance system in addition to SARS-CoV-2.
“From GECKO’s point of view, if the COVID-19 legislation is lifted, it should be ensured that an appropriate level of surveillance is maintained. In particular, wastewater monitoring and genomic surveillance (sequencing of positive samples) have proven to be effective means of reducing the viral load in the general population,” the advisory committee document said.
Collecting and analyzing past and future data on SARS-CoV-2 should therefore be “an important and indispensable aspect in planning the transition from pandemic management to regular operations,” says the new “Executive Report” of the Commision.
Continue to protect “vulnerable groups”.
The protection of “vulnerable groups” must remain a focus “especially when the current set of rules expires”. With regard to COVID-19 medication, purchasing and administration must be part of regular business operations.
