If employed – teachers must sign a Child Protection Declaration

Date:

In the future, teachers will be required to sign a declaration upon entry into service that they are not associated with sexual crimes. If the information is incorrect, the person can be fired with immediate effect, Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) announced.

“No person associated with sex offenses is allowed to teach at school. Child protection is our top priority and the school must be a safe place for the students,” the minister said in a broadcast.

training and code of conduct
In addition to the statement, mandatory child protection concepts for all schools, refresher training for teachers on prevention and a separate “child protection” working group for the education sector will follow. Among other things, this team should develop a code of conduct, further safeguards and specific processes for dealing with suspected abuses.

The reason for these steps is the case of the actor Florian Teichtmeister, who has to answer for himself in court for possessing images of abuse. As reported, the government also wants to launch a campaign to inform children about attacks and their rights. Family counseling centers should receive more funding, and psychosocial measures should be expanded.

Education is part of a larger package that includes higher penalties for portraying child sexual abuse. The sentences for possession of a “multiple statement” then range from a minimum of six months to three years. Multiple pornographic images of a minor carry a prison sentence of one to five years.
