They are 15 young people and the parents of the gunman, identified as Jaire Alkam, who died from shots fired by Israeli security forces after the attack in the capital.
At least 17 people have been arrested in an operation by Israeli security forces at the home of the Palestinian gunman who left at least seven dead and a dozen wounded at a synagogue in East Jerusalem last Friday.
Those arrested are 15 youths plus the parents of the gunman, identified as Jaire Alkam, who was shot dead by Israeli security forces shortly after carrying out a shooting from his vehicle against the worshipers who went to pray at the synagogue in Neve Yaakov, according to security sources quoted by Jerusalem Post.
While the preliminary balance of the attack is seven dead, the number could increase due to the severity of the injuries, as at least three are in critical condition in two hospitals in the area: a 70-year-old woman, a 20-year-old a 30-year-old man. In addition, there are two persons in moderate condition, a minor and a 60-year-old woman.
The attack on the synagogue came at the end of a day of intense tension in the West Bank over the deaths of nine Palestinians in an Israeli operation. A spokesman for the Islamist movement Hamas has described the shooting of Neve Yaakov as “a heroic act of revenge for the massacre” in the West Bank, according to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Aaronoth.
