Bitter disappointment among animal rights activists about Austria’s behavior when it comes to livestock transport: while Germany and the Netherlands persevere, our agricultural lobby does not want to stop the suffering.
“Austria has spoken in the Agriculture Council of the EU in favor of strict guidelines for the transport of live animals and has demanded that these be limited as much as possible. In principle, that is to be welcomed, but far too little ambition,” says animal welfare activist Elisabeth Penz indignantly.
Role model Germany
The main point of their criticism: Other countries have dared to go much further to finally end this terrible suffering. Because both neighboring Germany and, for example, the Netherlands have in any case demanded a ban on animal transport to countries outside the EU.
“Not a single word was heard from Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig. I expect that Austria’s top farmer will finally speak his mind and support the other countries against states that prefer not to control the suffering at all. Mr. Minister, finally stop this animal suffering!” Angry “Krone” animal welfare boss Maggie Entenfellner.
At the highest level
Apparent background: The powerful local livestock association with 20,000 members has lobbied massively. Even the responsible EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides has made the issue of animal transport a top priority and stressed that something needs to change here…
