After the disastrous elections in Lower Austria and in the middle of the election campaign, an interview with the head of state of Carinthia caused a new stir among the party leadership.
Please be quiet. The storm is coming soon enough. After the next elections in Carinthia on March 5. This is how the vote in the SPÖ can be interpreted. In an interview with PULS 24/ATV, Peter Kaiser from Carinthia looked back on the leadership of the federal SPÖ. He has a team in mind. Should Pamela Rendi Wagner and Burgenland’s head of state Hans Peter Doskozil take the lead? If he liked it, he said when asked.
Internal unrest and imposed restraint
Kaiser sees himself misquoted, his words taken out of context. Too late to calm down, even if and precisely because the party leadership left immediately, and as Kaiser propagated that he had never spoken of dual leadership. It’s the next act on Torn in Red.
In addition to Rendi-Wagner, Doskosil also has his fans, and then there are those who long for a breath of fresh air from the outside. Provocateur Doskozil wants to be restrained during Kaiser’s election campaign. Nevertheless, when asked about Kaiser’s team-building fantasies, he said, “The party’s overall image and polls can be improved. But now is not the right time for these debates.”
Strategic balancing act and genie out of the bottle
The mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, is regarded as the strongest prop for the party leader. He says, “I don’t get involved in discussions that aren’t necessary.” David Egger, Doskosil-affine SPÖ boss in Salzburg, where elections will be held in April, thinks Kaiser’s idea is very good: “It should be discussed internally.”
For political expert Thomas Hofer, Kaiser’s performance is not a misstep. “It’s unprofessional at best. But he’s a professional and he knows what he’s doing.” He should have spoken out 100 percent exclusively for Rendi-Wagner to avoid discussions. “He keeps both options open. On the one hand, he does not want to face Rendi-Wagner head-on, on the other hand, the opposite does not help him in the election campaign. Doskozil’s views are also popular in Carinthia.” Even if Kaiser would want to put things into perspective, says Hofer, “it’s like putting the genie back in the bottle. Hardly possible.”
