Unusually sharp criticism of Brussels from an ÖVP politician: Styrian MP Simone Schmiedtbauer (ÖVP) sees the new plans as a threat to agriculture and forestry – and also to our food supply.
Simone Schmiedtbauer has been an ÖVP member of the European Parliament for four years. Now the former mayor of Hitzendorf is deploying heavy artillery against the EU Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen and Frans Timmermans.
The reason is a bill for nature restoration presented by the Commission last year – with ambitious goals that Schmiedtbauer goes much too far: “The Commission wants to return nature to the state of the 1950s”, she says – which mainly The costs of the land and forestry, representing Styrian interests in Brussels.
“Shouldn’t become dependent on food”
Farmland would be shut down and other pesticides banned. “The war in Ukraine shows how important it is that we are as independent as possible when it comes to food supply.” would allow more agricultural imports, such as beef from this distant region, shows the “misleading way of the EU leaders”.
In general, Schmiedtbauer strongly criticizes the committee: it would listen far too little to science and practice, instead lofty goals and strict prohibitions would be formulated. “But there are no alternatives or incentives to address this.”
Wanted to run again
Despite this “disillusionment” in her parliamentary work, the Hitzendorf native says she remains “an ardent European” and would like to run again in the 2024 elections. No change in state politics? “There are plenty of good people out there.”
