He Institute for Memory, Coexistence and Human Rights-Gogora and the The City Hall of Galdakao recovered the remains Pedro Asua Zubiaura shooter from the municipality of Vizcaya whose remains were found in a Jaca cemetery tombin Huesca.
As reported by the Basque government, the work of excavation were performed this Saturday by the Aranzadi Science Association in the municipal cemetery of the city of Huesca.
Historical documentation has thus made it possible to find the remains of Pedro Asua Zubiaur, a militiaman from the Zabalbide battalion, attached to the Republican Left, who was shot down in Jaca on February 7, 1938at the age of 21, after being sentenced to death by a court-martial.
In this way, technical memory personnel from the Institute of Memory, Coexistence and Human Rights-Gogora, the Mayor of Galdakao, Iñigo Hernando, and members of the Jaca Municipal Corporation have traveled to the place to check the jobs.
At the initiative of Pedro Asua’s family, the Galdakao City Council has enlisted the help of historian Ander Aperribai to investigate the circumstances of his death, allowing the recovery of his remains.
The location, excavation and identification tasks have been funded by the Gogora Institute under the agreement between the Basque government and the Aranzadi Science Society.
On October 13 and 14 last year, the Aranzadi Science Society carried out preliminary prospecting work on the ground that finally allowed the excavation to be carried out. In addition, the family will receive the remains of the shooter on March 19, in an act that will be held next to the Elexalde cemetery in Galdakao.
Who was Pedro Asua?
Pedro Asua Zubiaur (13/03/1916 Galdakao – Jaca, 02/07/1938) was a militiaman of the Zabalbide battalion, attached to the Republican Left. When he was arrested, he was forced to do forced labor in the Workers’ Battalions, first in Asturias and later in Jaca. Due to a series of complaints, he was tried by a court-martial and sentenced to death, and was shot on February 7, 1938 in Jaca. The book ‘El echo de las descargas. Goodbye to Republican Hope,” by Esteban C. Gómez, deals with the circumstances of his execution and the burial of several people in a grave at Jaca Cemetery.
Pedro was born in the Aldatze hamlet of Elexalde (Galdakao) when the war broke out. He was 20 years old, he was studying to apply for a postman job at the post office and he and his two younger sisters were orphaned by father and mother.
