Concerns about data – Ministry of the Interior is investigating a possible TikTok ban

Date:

Following the example of many countries, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior is now also investigating a ban on the social media platform TikTok, also from China. The ministry is currently dealing with the “risk and settlement,” as explained on Tuesday.

More and more governments and authorities around the world are banning TikTok on their employees’ mobile phones. Austria is also now considering such steps, as the Interior Ministry confirmed to APA and orf.at. The IT experts at the Ministry of the Interior are currently “looking at” how to use the platform, it said.

Already banned by several states
Other countries, such as Italy, the US and Canada, have also banned TikTok from corporate mobile phones. A similar instruction has previously been given to the staff of the European Commission. Employees of the German Federal Press Service are also not allowed to use the app on their business devices. According to a media report, the Federal Bureau of Information Security (BSI) has reviewed potential risks of the app. The results of this study were initially not made public.

Critical handling of user data
With a billion users worldwide, TikTok is especially popular with the younger generation. You can make short videos, an algorithm will suggest videos to watch. The app, which belongs to the Chinese group ByteDance, has long been a thorn in the side of security authorities. They fear that the government in Beijing will gain control over the data of foreign users.

They can also manipulate the software’s recommendation algorithms to exert influence. TikTok and the Chinese government have always denied the allegations. The latter described the US ban as an abuse of state power to suppress foreign companies. The US has taken the concept of national security too far.
