The Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policy, Nerea Melgosa, handed over 11 of these 52 new “Memory and Recognition Notebooks” in a deed in Vitoria-Gasteiz. As he has emphasized, “we want a future with memory, a memory with truth”, in order to proclaim that “it was unfair”.

Today, the Basque government recalled “the lives cut short by the unreasonableness of ETA terrorism”. 52 families in cases that are still legally unresolved, and it has done so with the delivery of 11 of the 52 new ones “Memory and Recognition Notebooks”drawn up by the Directorate of Human Rights, Victims and Diversity in collaboration with the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT).
During a performance at the Villasuso Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where relatives of these 11 victims were present, the Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policy, Nerea Melgosahas claimed “a future with memory and a memory with truth”, allowing “everyone to look the victims in the eye and proclaim: it was unfair, radically unfair”.
This new shipment of “Memory and Recognition Notebooks” focuses on the cases of victims of ETA terrorism with incomplete clarification from the 1980s, completing the first phase assembled and delivered in December 2021.
The documents collect who these victims were, how they lived and how they died, as well as various graphic material provided by family members with the help of AVT. Also included is a document signed by Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu, in which he “solemnly declares the institutional recognition of the Basque government” to the victim’s family as “a contribution to the right to truth and justice” and underlines the injustice of any murder. Of the 52 files that were completed in this second phase, the next of kin of 11 victims have collected their notebooks from the counsellor.

“There is no reason, neither political nor non-political, that justifies a murder. There was not. There is not. There will not be,” Melgosa assured. The Minister recalled that tomorrow will be the European Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism, an event she took the opportunity to remember the victims of ETA terrorism and also the victims of other manifestations of terrorism. “Because all murders are, are and will be, radically unfair. Because all the mothers, wives, daughters and sisters of victims of terrorism have wondered why, cried and suffered and suffer the same pain. And because I am safe, they all strive for the same future: a future without violence and in peace,” he concludes.
