The climate summit in Dubai looks like a staged show with more than 70,000 participants and great rhetoric. This is the conclusion that young activists who participated in the summit have now come to.
Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler faced a devastating half-term review on Thursday when she arrived at the eco summit. Activists say the conference is on the verge of collapse. Austrian youth delegate Philipp Steininger analyzes: “Everything is going wrong here!”
The summit presents itself with a splendor of superlatives, but behind the scenes everything seems like a staged climate show with more than 70,000 participants, shows, great rhetoric – but serious climate protection falls short!
Horrible damage
The bare numbers: Global warming is already causing terrible damage, estimated at around $400 billion (equivalent to €370.91 billion) per year from 2030. In stark contrast are the relatively low amounts of approximately US$720 million (equivalent to €667.63 million) provided so far by industrialized countries in compensation for damages and losses. Steininger is disappointed and demands: “The host country and the world must finally take effective measures to offset the consequences of global warming.”
