The Biscayan city of Gernika commemorated this Tuesday the 85th anniversary of the bombing of the civilian population by the Condor Legion of the Nazi Army and Italian Fascists, with the participation in the reaction and the flower offering for the victims of the Lehendakari, Inigo Urkulluthe First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine, Sergei Soloveyand the municipal corporation, headed by the mayor, José María Gorroño.
Councilors Josu Erkoreka, Idoia Mendia and Beatriz Artolazabal accompanied Urkullu in this act, which was held this afternoon at Zallo cemetery, in tribute to those who died in the 1937 bombings during the Civil War.

The Spanish governmenthas for the first time “expressly condemned the bombing of Gernika”, in an institutional statement on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the bombing.
In a statement read by the Minister of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Democratic Memory, Félix Bolaños, the government of Spain “for the first time” expressly condemned the indiscriminate bombing of the civilian population by the city of Gernika.
For its part, the Basque government He appreciated the latest steps taken by the Spanish government regarding the bombing and attached “great importance” to the presence of a senior government representative at the events organized.
In the press conference after the Basque Governing Council, his spokesman, Bingen Zupiria, recalled the bombings that “devastated” Gernika 85 years ago today, when Ukraine and its “martyr” cities suffered “the same barbarity” and called for ” Don’t forget so that something like this never happens again”.
But the mayor of Gernika, Jose Maria Gorronohas asked the Spanish government to acknowledge “Franco responsibility” for the bombing.
The mayor recalled that in 1997 the then German President Roman Herzog took “responsibility” on behalf of his country for the air raid on Gernika by the Condor Legion, “recognizing the mistake of the German aircraft and asking for forgiveness”.
