Millions of heavy transporters, diversion traffic, driving bans, block handling and Co.: The subject of traffic is and remains a (permanent) problem in Tyrol – including constant criticism from Germany and especially Italy. In the dispute with neighboring countries over the transit issue, Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) and Transport Minister René Zumtobel (SPÖ) are calling for consultations. Because: “The pressure is increasing.”
“We notice that the pressure is increasing from Rome, Berlin, but also from Brussels,” says Mattle about the current debate, initiated by anti-transit fighter Fritz Gurgiser in the “Krone”: “Especially the Italian Transport Minister (Matteo Salvini, ed. .) should stand up for the transport transition instead of sticking to the fossil transport policy of the 20th century. If he is genuinely interested in a constructive discussion to solve the transit problem, I would like to invite him to the manor of Innsbruck, 30 kilometers away, the next time he visits the Brenner Pass,” says the governor of Tyrol.
There are very clear European solutions, such as rail transfers, a corridor toll or the slot system, on the table: “Health and the environment outweigh the interests of the freight lobby.”
“Need a partnership solution”
Transport provincial councilor René Zumtobel explains: “We are working intensively with our neighboring regions of South Tyrol and Bavaria on a long-term, trilateral traffic management system to create a road that can be planned – just like for the rail – for the entire Brenner Pass. hall We need a partnership-based solution for the entire Alpine crossing and with it the support of the nation states.”
Warning from the transit forum
Fritz Gurgiser from the Transit Forum recently warned that there is “danger” with the driving bans for trucks in Tyrol. Politicians risk their survival by doing nothing. “The constant gossip from the South and North now demands tough stances from the state and federal government on the transit issue,” Gurgiser stressed.
There is no obligation under European law “which stipulates that an entire country must be terrorized by transit traffic”.
