“Unenforceable” – Ex-Education Minister Against Mandatory German Break

Date:

Former Education Minister Heinz Faßmann (ÖVP) has criticized both the mandatory German language requirement during planned school holidays in Lower Austria and the advertising ban for the corona vaccination agreed in the black-blue coalition pact. He is particularly critical of the latter.

“Every day you see advertisements on television for a remedy for erection problems and serious advertising for the corona vaccination should be banned?”, explains Fassmann. The fact that there should no longer be any advertising for the Covid vaccination in Lower Austria is another symbol of a corona policy with blue handwriting. However, the federal government can continue to advertise – even in the future black-and-blue-governed country.

“Vaccine Saved Lives”
As for the vaccination, in an interview with the “Salzburger Nachrichten”, Faßmann referred to its effectiveness and passing all clinical tests. “And to ban government-funded advertising for this, even if it’s proven to save lives?” asks the president, adding, “It’s incomprehensible to me.”

German demand “already rejected in 2018”
With regard to the planned compulsory German during recess in schools in Lower Austria, the ex-minister of education said that this point had long been ticked off: “There is relevant legal advice that this is not enforceable. As Minister of Education, I have this claim already rejected in 2018.”

Zadic: “Any language is an advantage”
A few days ago, Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens) was also critical of the passage in the Lower Austrian ÖVP-FPÖ employment contract that in future students should only speak German during breaks. That “is the wrong way,” she said on Thursday at a multilingual reading day at the Brüßlgasse primary school in Vienna-Ottakring. In today’s globalized world, “every language is an advantage, also for our economy”, the minister emphasized.

Multilingualism and language diversity are an enrichment. “I would like to tell the children that they can be proud of their abilities,” Zadic emphasized. In any case, speaking additional languages ”is an enrichment – it doesn’t matter if it’s French, Indian, BKS, Spanish, Arabic or any other language”.
