Iñigo Hernando specifies that ‘Txapote’ and Bienzobas “are within the classification of other events arising from political violence, particularly in prison policy and in the application of exceptional laws.”
The mayor of Galdakao (EH Bildu), Iñigo Hernando, has endorsed Aranzadi’s work in the Municipal website about Memory and has shown his “absolute respect” for all victims, “without any exception and completely rejecting their political use”.
The classifications of various rights violations appear on the web, divided into two sections: human rights violations and other suffering, specifying that “those who have appeared in the media” – in reference to txapote and Bienzobas- can be found in this last section, “within the classification of other events arising from political violence, particularly in prison policy and in the application of exceptional laws.”
Hernando has spoken this way after, last Tuesday, the Galdakao PSE-EE demand that the municipal government team – consisting of EH Bildu, Auzoak, Usansolo Herria and Podemos – remove the names of ETA members from the municipal website created on Memory -‘Galdakao Oroimena’- Xabier Garcia Gaztelu txapote and Jon Bienzobas.
In a statement, the mayor of this Biscayne municipality recalled that the city council signed a contract with Aranzadi in 2021 to document human rights violations in the city.
Hernando specified that the City Council is not an expert in classifying this type of documentation and so hired Aranzadi. As he explained, the City Council considers it essential to promote this type of initiative “in favor of coexistence and to build a better society”.
Therefore, he wanted to count on the Aranzadi Science Society, which has contributed its knowledge and prestige, to be able to carry out the criteria of truth, justice and reparation established by the Basque government and the Gogora Institute. On this path, it is necessary to know the integral truth of the people first,” he added
Iñigo Hernando wanted to appreciate the scientific work of the Aranzadi Science Society and recalled that this initiative has been carried out in other locations such as Azpeitia, Tolosa, Erandio or Hernani. As he added, these works are carried out according to the criteria of the Basque governmentUNESCO or the University of the Basque Country.
As he stressed, taking into account the “trajectory and prestige” of the Aranzadi Science Society, “for the first time in the path of truth, justice and reparation, there was the opportunity to objectively record the truth of the congregation”. “Possibility to conduct a comprehensive X-ray that objectively documents cases from 1936 to the present through a web page,” he added.
Iñigo Hernando assured that the initiative was presented to all municipal groups before work started June 16, 2021 in the plenary hall and Aranzadi himself explained the details of the work, as well as what kind of classifications would appear on the website, based on international standards and those of the Basque government.
As he added, the initiative received the support of all political groups and after a year and a half of work, the web page created by Aranzadi was publicly presented on February 2, 2023of 503 cases from residents of Galdakao.
