The Red-White-Red Card attracted 1856 qualified people from abroad in the first quarter. Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) and Chamber of Commerce boss Harald Mahrer want to get more than 10,000 a year.
The reform of the red-white-red card, which allows skilled workers from other EU countries to work with us, is bearing fruit: in the first quarter of 2023, 1856 qualified people joined us, an increase of 48 percent compared to 2022 The majority were much-needed technicians and IT professionals, followed by managers and healthcare workers.
“It’s a piece of the puzzle that will help us move forward,” said Labor Minister Kocher, referring to the dire shortage of skilled workers. What helps is that since October work experience has been valued as much as education, that English is often sufficient as a language skill and that all shortage occupations are exempt from the income level that must be met. Most of the new staff comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by India.
To attract even more well-educated, capable people (for example from Indonesia or the Philippines) to the country, the Ministry and the Economic Chamber are now joining forces. The aim is to make Austria better known as an attractive location. According to WKÖ boss Mahrer, more than 10,000 skilled workers per year will be recruited in the future.
