Alfred Stingl is dead. The popular former mayor was greatly appreciated over all party and national borders. Until the end he campaigned for fellow people.
From the construction of the artaus, The Murinsel, The Stadthalle, The Literature House or the Helmut-List-Halle, Through The Reconstruction of the Synagogue, the Fh Joanneum, The Realignment of the Geriatric Health Centers for the prparatios for the prpars for the Old Town of Graz as a UNESCO World Heritage Heir in 1999 and that the Murmetropole 2001 was named the first Human Rights City of Europe, fell in the term of office of Alfred Stingl.
The trained letters, which fourth his 86th birthday in May, undoubtedly leaves the state a great legacy. But it was rather his actions and words that burned in the heads and especially hearts of many grazers. Although nowadays many politicians have to tolerate all stripes with the accusation of strangling with the “normal” people, Stingl have always been strange.
He was responsible for the social department in the town hall for more than 20 years. The help of the weaker was driven and a matter of his heart for decades. Until it was no longer possible, he campaigned for disadvantaged people after his political career, for example as the patron of the “from person to person” of the week (now my district).
Even Kreisky got a basket from Stingl
Singl suffered several times the call from Vienna – Bruno Kreisky Wild Grazer also greatly appreciated outside of all parties. But the hometown always remained faithful to his hometown: “It would have been very honorable, but it would have been a bit of a municipal policy, it is nicer and more satisfying,” he once said.
One of his most bitter hours was probably the elections of the 1998 city council when the Spös crashed to 30.9 percent at that time, Stingl remained mayor, but covered the party chairman. The ÖVP was in power five years later. The fact that his social -democrats did not even reach 10 percent in the last elections, was a blow to the stomach pit for Stingl and left him stunned.
“You are the inventor of charity”
Over the years, however, he stayed on the tram for a lot of grazer or while walking with the “Mr. Mayor”. Perhaps the most appropriate quote from his grandson Max is on the occasion of the parties for his 80th birthday: “You are the inventor of Charity.”
On May 29, 2025, one day after his 86th birthday, the big Styriaan closed his eyes forever after a serious illness. It can be comfortable that he is now united with his beloved wife Elli, whom he has maintained for years and has sacrified himself after her stroke – because as if it actually exists, Alfred Stingl is undoubtedly reserved in heaven.
