To protect himself from the “threats of North Korea’s communist forces,” South Korea’s president declared martial law on Tuesday.
Head of State Yoon Suk Yeol informed the population of the country’s drastic decision in a speech broadcast live on television. The president did not announce what immediate measures would be taken. Yonhap news agency reported that parliament was in lockdown.
South Korea and North Korea have remained at war since the end of the Korean War in 1953, and tensions between the two countries have increased recently. Seoul also viewed the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia with great concern.
