In the former Soviet Republic of Armenia, the security authorities arrested the politically influential archbishop of Tawusch, Bagrat Galstanjan. The leader of the “Holy Fight” movement is accused of an attempted coup.
“The security organs were a large -scale and treacherous plan of the criminal oligarchy to destabilize the situation in the Republic of Armenia and the seizure of power,” said the head of the government of the Nikol Paschinjan government on Facebook on Wednesday.
Russian citizens have also arrested
Masked police officers led Galstanjan from his home on Wednesday morning, as Armenian media reported. In addition to Galstanjan, other clergy and politicians from the opposition were arrested, including the businessman Samwel Karapetjan, who has Russian citizenship. There were also various house searches. The Kremlin gently commented on Karapetjan’s arrest and emphasized that Moscow was interested in the stability of Armenia.
Terrisor prepared attacks?
The researchers accuse Galstanjan and his followers the preparation of terrorist attacks. The formation of around 200 shock troops with 25 men each was planned. Various phone calls from Galstanjan are intended, among other things, to prove the planned coup. The opposition described such a plan as a fake. The procedure should do the critics of Prime Minister Paschinjan Mundsstot, said it.
Location in Armenia tense after defeat around Berg-Karabach
Galstanjan leads the “Holy Battle” movement, which strives for the fall of Prime Minister Paschinjan. Already in the previous year he was considered the spokesperson for the sometimes violent protests in the country against Paschinjan.
Armenia is in a serious political crisis after it has lost the conflict region of Berg-Karabach in the fall 2023, dealing with improved, oil and rich, Muslim Azerbaijanism and had to flee more than 100,000 Christian, ethnic Armenians to the motherland.
Azerbaijan exerts pressure on Armenia
In addition, the authoritarian leadership Baku maintains the military pressure on Jerevan and demands further areas of Armenia. Paschinjan has indicated the willingness to transfer control of different border villages to the neighboring country in exchange for a peace treaty. Many Armenians strictly reject territorial concessions to the neighbors seen as an arc enemy.
After the military defeat against Azerbaijan in the east, Paschinjan also strives for an approach with the historic arch enemy of Türkiye in the West. The background of this conflict is the genocide of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. Turkey had supported Azerbaijan in the war in Berg-Karabach. At the same time, as the previous protective power of Armenia, Russia did not intervene in the war, so that Armenia now has to fully reorganize itself in terms of external and security policy.
