Found in Zeanuri the remains of a Basque warrior from the Civil War

Date:

The Gogora-Memory Institute and the Aranzadi Society have recovered the remains found by Euskal Prospekzio Taldea during a routine search in Barazar, a war front in 1937, during the Franco offensive to take Bilbao.

The Basque government has the remains of a Civil War fighter in the Biscayan city Zeanuri. So far there are no indications that allow us to give direction to the identification of the recovered bone remains.

The director of the Institute for Memory, Coexistence and Human Rights-GogoraAintzane Ezenarro, attended this Saturday morning on the slopes of Mount Larragan in Zeanuri the excavation of the remains of a soldier killed in the civil war, carried out by the Aranzadi Science Association.

In particular, a bone remains was found along with various objects, such as a cartridge belt containing ammunition, a small aluminum glass and the top part of a fork. The characteristics of the objects coincide with those of the Basque army to its fighters.

In addition, the historical documentation of the development of the Civil War now places the front in that area -alto de Barazar and surrounding mountains -, in April 1937, in the offensive of the rebel army to conquer Bizkaia.

The mayor of Zeanuri, Eider Ajuriagerra, members of the municipal corporation, the parliamentarian of EH Bildu and member of the board of directors of Gogora, Julen Arzuaga, as well as representatives of historical remembrance associations, also attended the recovery of the remains.

The find did Euskal Prospekzio Taldea, in a routine survey through the various Civil War battle fronts in Euskadi, on the northwestern slope of Mount Larragan. This performance is part of the program of ‘Quest for the Lost of the Civil War’ developed by the Basque government through the agreement with the Aranzadi Science Society.
