Politicians from Europe and the US are almost holding hands on the continent. Chancellor Nehammer is also embarking on a tour.
US Vice President Kamala Harris has just been to Ghana, and numerous US ministers and the First Lady, Jill Biden, have recently traveled to Africa. European politics joins the list of visitors, French President Emmanuel Macron is almost a regular guest and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recently sought allies here.
China’s growing influence
So now Chancellor Karl Nehammer again. After the ÖVP boss was in Morocco at the end of February, he is now going to Angola, Ghana and Egypt. The reason why Africa is suddenly so coveted is the growing influence of China and Russia. Only 28 of the 54 African countries that are members of the United Nations support the UN resolution condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Nehammer: ‘Too busy with other continents’
Karl Nehammer emphasizes another aspect: “As the European Union, we as the European Union have not engaged with the continent intensively enough for far too long. In some cases we have become unilaterally dependent on other countries, such as Russia or China. It is now all the more important to open our diplomatic doors to the Global South – especially to Africa.”
The Chancellor will be accompanied by Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig, Federal Police Director Michael Takàcs, Secretary General of Foreign Affairs Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal and a business delegation.
