The federal government spent 339.8 million euros last year on the reception of refugees, according to a response from the Ministry of the Interior to FPÖ MP Hannes Amesbauer. However, the ministry emphasizes that the costs have been significantly reduced compared to previous years.
The average value is calculated on the basis of 42,095 asylum seekers. This yielded more than 22 euros per day per refugee.
If you look at the total expenditure, in some cases it was considerably lower than in previous years. For example, in 2019 they amounted to 353 million and in 2018, when the Ministry of the Interior was headed by current FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl, almost 466 million. At that time, however, more than 61,000 people had to be cared for.
Staff and catering thick chunks
Large chunks account for personnel costs at over 27 million and catering at over 20 million. Rents and operating costs, such as security payments by third parties, each cost more than twelve million.
The costs of social security and medical care for refugees were relatively high last year, at 5.7 and 3.8 million respectively. 4.7 million had to be spent on transportation as part of basic services. 2.3 million in pocket money flowed.
