Review of EH Bildu, Pello Otxandiano, after passing the Education Act

Date:

The coalition notes “fundamental changes in the right direction” in the text of the first draft. Among other things, he applauds “overcoming the paradigm of linguistic models”.

EH Bildu sees a “historic opportunity” for a “transformation” and a “new phase in Basque education” with the new education law, approved yesterday by the Basque government. According to the coalition, the text offers sufficient basis to enter into parliamentary debate in this legislature and to arrive at a good Education Act.

At a press conference in San Sebastián, the director of the EH Bildu program, Otxandian hair, has offered an initial assessment of the educational project and insisted that “it is time to take the plunge, to strive for the transformation of the system as a whole”. In this sense, the coalition visualizes this transformation using “the best of every tradition of the Basque educational universe”. “In other words, harmonizing the self-management ability of the Ikastolas and the egalitarian pressures of the public school,” he stressed.

Otxandiano notes “fundamental changes in the right direction” in the text compared to the first version. Among other things, he mentioned that the conditions that educational centers must meet in exchange for receiving public funds have been included, basic anti-segregation measures have been added and specific measures have been added to guarantee truly free, and improved and more specifically defined problems related to learning languages.

Therefore, special emphasis has been placed on the part that regulates language learning. The new standard, according to EH Bildu, “transcends linguistic models and places us in a new paradigm of language policy”. The goal, added the program director, is “the full multilingual training” of the students, “exploring the limits of the school’s capacity for this.”

Likewise, the Coalition welcomes the fact that the justification of the law has added that Basque is in a minority and minority situation, that the learning of Basque is linked to the transmission of Basque culture and that it has included the obligation to evaluation of the centres’ linguistic projects.

Finally, EH Bildu, who will amend specific issues of the new law, has shown his “willingness to reach consensus with the rest of the parties and representatives” in the Basque Parliament.
