National trend? – Black – Blue: the new political color of fashion

Date:

Another ÖVP-FPÖ government is emerging in Salzburg. What does this mean for the federal government? Statements by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and a look into the past serve as a guideline.

After the polls, Salzburg Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) hatched a bold plan: he does not want to strive for a two-way coalition with the SPÖ or the FPÖ, although voting is possible, but a three-way coalition. An “Alliance for Salzburg”. Who doesn’t play along: the SPÖ around David Egger.

SPÖ has until Tuesday
Red paint for black and blue? Certainly not. No new dirndl with the FPÖ under Marlene Svazek. The decision was unanimous, even though many comrades would appreciate the trio.

Haslauer leaves a door open. Till Tuesday. If the Reds do not intervene, the chance of black and blue in Salzburg increases enormously. Because few can imagine that, after the SPÖ has prevented the “alliance”, Haslauer invites them to a government meeting.

After Lower Austria, another country is probably baptized in the fashion color black and blue. What does that mean for the 2024 National Council elections?

The Federal President and Jörg Haider as guides
In terms of content, there are indications for a national follow-up, says political scientist Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle. “From the Chancellor’s commitment to Austria as a country for motorists to the asylum issue, they are close to the FPÖ.” The Brussels crocodile must also be used again and again for blows. Stainer-Hämmerle: “Just think of the Schengen veto of the ÖVP in Romania and Bulgaria.” There are hardly any offers for the Greens and SPÖ.

Little FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl could be a big obstacle. “But here too the ÖVP can sit back. The Federal President indicated that he would not swear him in.”

Doyen Jörg Haider, omnipresent despite his death, has another option: after waves of outrage at home and abroad, he sent Susanne Riess-Passer to Vienna in 2000 as vice-chancellor. This time it could mean, “Marlene, go ahead.”
