Opinion of the EH Bildu spokesperson on the Pegasus case

Date:

According to EH Bildu’s spokesman in the Basque Parliament, the first step could be for the Congress’s council of spokesmen to approve today the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the matter of political espionage.

The case of political espionage through the Pegasus program continues for another day and gives something to talk about. EH Bildu’s spokesman in the Basque Parliament, Maddalen Iriarte, has described as “serious scandal” and has asked to go to the end to clarify what happened. In an interview assigned to Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, he assured that the PSOE has the opportunity today to shed light on this issue. And it is that the Council of Spokespersons of Congress can approve the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry in the case of political espionage.

The Spanish government reported yesterday that Pedro Sánchez and Margarita Robles were also being spied on via Pegasus. Before it became known that 65 independence leaders were also spied on with Pegasus. The spokesman for EH Bildu has assured that “they first denied it, then they justified and downplayed it”, while in recent hours they have “firmly denounced” the espionage they have undergone. “EH Bildu wonders why they have not acted with the same determination in light of the 65 cases of espionage in Euskal Herria and Catalonia, when all cases of espionage are serious and reportable,” he stressed.

“We need light and data, and to clarify all this with evidence, that the state sewers have not used the Pegasus program to carry out political espionage, and if various state institutions have carried out mass espionage without judicial authorization, lies responsibility with the government because it has not checked them,” he assured.

Likewise, Maddalen Iriarte hopes that the news of the spying on Sánchez and Robles is “not a maneuver” to divert attention and that “they really want to get to the bottom of what happened”.

Regarding the call for a Public Job Offer for 6,300 places in education, Iriarte believes it could be a step forward in meeting the educational needs of the future, despite falling short in principle.

On the other hand, he has also underlined the need to “urgently” open the debate on taxes in order to “redistribute wealth”.
