In the special session, the SPÖ produced two scandals: the blockade of two-thirds laws and an embarrassing topic with Werner Kogler. Is that worthy of a state support party?
The Reds provided multiple excitement at the end of the week. It started with a murder topic on SPÖ’s Twitter channel by Green Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler and the question: “Would you buy an anti-inflation package from this man? Answer: “Neither do we.”
SPÖ blocked laws
But that’s not all: Friday ended with the blockade of SPÖ legislation that requires a constitutional majority. That means the government needs a two-thirds majority. Either the SPÖ or the FPÖ must agree to the law. An announcement that also supports Hans Peter Doskozil, but sparked discussion. Is the boycott a legitimate tactic by a venerable party like the SPÖ to force the government into further anti-inflation packages?
“Incomprehensible tactics”
Political scientist Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle has a clear position. “I don’t understand this tactic. It’s not state support. Because the damage stays with all of us.” After all, these are important energy laws that must be introduced quickly, otherwise millions of fines could follow. Without the approval of the SPÖ, things will come to a standstill. Stainer-Hämmerle believes that this action will also not benefit the population in terms of image values: “Tactical calculations by parties are never welcome. The population recognizes that this is just a spectacle.”
In the matter of the blockade, the red ranks are closed, Spöler was outraged by the Kogler photo. The deputy of the National Council, Mario Lindner, states: “Whoever posts such a thing through the SPÖ channel (…) Such a thing does not work at all. Such a post is unworthy of the SPÖ.” Conclusion: A black Friday for the SPÖ.
