The Höchster already has one foot in Brussels, where he will be the new EU commissioner from November. The face of the still sitting vice-president of Finance still adorns the election posters of the National Council.
The parties are once again trying to woo voters with more or less imaginative slogans. Election posters of the National Council with portraits of the leading candidates have sprung up like mushrooms. In addition to Norbert Sieber (leading candidate in the North constituency), Magnus Brunner, head of the Vorarlberg state list, can be seen on the ÖVP list. But one thing is already certain: since the highest Johannes Hahn will succeed him as EU Commissioner, he will under no circumstances accept the mandate of the National Council.
So why is he on the election posters? The reason for this is quickly explained: when the lists had to be submitted, it was simply not yet clear who would be Austria’s new EU commissioner.
Best chances still for Sieber and Eder
The ÖVP should be happy. With the very popular Finance Minister at the top of the state list, you can certainly get one or two votes. For Brunner’s black colleagues, the chances of joining the National Council do not change. While Sieber is expected to defend the mandate in the north, Heike Eder (second place on the state list) should appear in the federal parliament instead of Brunner. If he were to become a minister again, this would also be the case because of the resignation of his mandate.
