609 delegates – Red Showdown in Linz: Vienna decides

Date:

On June 3, 609 SPÖ deputies in Linz will decide who should head their party in the future – and who is also likely to lead them in the next National Council elections against the latest opponent and pollster FPÖ. The winner of the member survey, Hans Peter Doskozil, and Andreas Babler, who came in second, are the candidates. Support from their own provinces of Burgenland (Doskosil) and Lower Austria (Babler) is likely to be given, but it will be the delegates from Vienna who will be decisive.

After more than heated committee meetings on Tuesday afternoon, the Social Democrats decided to stick with the original plan and decide on the chairmanship of an extraordinary party congress in Linz.

Hard connection in the committees
However, it was a long way to this logical result of the commissions, which already showed Doskosil what awaits him in the future. The Viennese provincial party, which harbors deep enmity with the provincial governor of Burgenland, has shown itself surprisingly flexible, even by its standards.

After all, it was the Reds in the capital, who were always skeptical of any membership survey and had previously rejected a second round in the committees, who now suddenly favored a second base vote after the departure of their favorite incumbent Pamela Rendi -Wagner had the round found. Led by Mayor Michael Ludwig, the Presidium campaigned for a run-off election and more or less openly supported Traiskirchen’s mayor, Babler, who represents the party’s left wing.

The Viennese will decide
In Linz, too, the voting behavior of the Viennese comrades and trade unionists will largely determine whether Babler has a chance at the party congress against Doskozil, who is supported by the vast majority of the federal states. Because most party bookkeepers live in Vienna, the Viennese also have the most delegates. In any case, Mayor Ludwig did not (yet) decide on Tuesday who would be supported in Vienna.

A total of 609 delegates will be called to vote, with 350 coming from district organizations alone, plus 30 from the national organizations. The unionists have at least 50 deputies, 30 women – both camps, leaning towards Babler, at least at the top. The rest will be randomly distributed, including seven delegates from the Parliamentary Club, ten delegates from the Sixty Plus Working Group, six delegates from Kinderfreunde or three delegates from the Association of Socialist Students in Austria (VSStÖ) or the Action for Critical Pupils (AKS) . Incidentally, two delegates come from the ranks of the Red Bikers, the social-democratic motorcycle club.
