Kaserne Güssing – Bundesheer fends off SPÖ criticism of embezzlement plans

Date:

The all-clear from the Ministry of Defense: The Güssing barracks in Lower Austria are intended to be a self-sufficient base in a crisis.

“All 100 army barracks will be self-sufficient. In the event of a power failure, they will continue to operate as before, with their own petrol station, their own water and electricity, medical care and sufficient food supplies.

As reported, National Councilor Christian Drobits, military spokesman Robert Laimer and Güssing’s mayor Vinzenz Knor – all three Social Democrats – unanimously criticized the fact that the Defense Ministry’s expansion plan did not include the Montecuccoli barracks as a security island.

Only the barracks at Bruckneudorf will be upgraded, as will 99 other bases, it said. “The fact is that all 100 self-sufficient properties should authorize the military to carry out orders even during the crisis. The barracks in Güssing are of course part of that,” the responsible federal service countered.

Selection based on strategic considerations
“A dozen of the self-sufficient barracks will also be expanded into security islands,” explained Defense Secretary Klaudia Tanner. The General Staff made the selection based on strategic considerations.

The so-called safety islands must become even more self-sufficient. “The range of funds is so large that blue light organizations can also moor there. These plans have been around for a long time and nothing has changed,” said Colonel Michael Bauer, spokesman for the ministry. “Thanks to the very positive budget development, we are able to adapt the 100 most important properties to be self-sufficient for at least 14 days by 2025,” Tanner announces.

Money is available for barracks
In Burgenland, one million euros has been earmarked for the expansion of the Benede barracks in Bruckneudorf as a security island. Another reason for the upgrade is the proximity to Vienna-Schwechat Airport. For the “back-up” of the Martinkazerne in Eisenstadt, 420,000 euros have been provided. The adaptation of the Montecuccoli barracks for at least 14 days of self-sufficiency is listed in the 2023 budget at 300,000 euros.
