The drive of a married couple with summer tires in Mattighofen in Upper Austria under winter road conditions ended fatally on Sunday night. The car skidded and crashed into a stream. The driver (60) was just able to save himself, but unfortunately there was no help for the woman.
The couple (60 and 54) from Feldkirchen/M. drove his SUV on the Rosengasse in Mattighofen around 1:15 a.m. When driving over a bridge, the car suddenly skidded in winter driving conditions and fell over an embankment in the Kühbach, where it overturned and sank with the wheels up. The man just managed to free himself from the sinking car, his wife remained behind in the car.
witness tried to help
A local witness (55) immediately alerted the police and then jumped into the stream to free the trapped woman. But the car got stuck in the mud and couldn’t open the doors. Just two minutes later, a radio patrol crew arrived and also rushed to help. A rescue team also arrived at the scene of the accident.
Failed attempts at CPR
A police officer who jumped into the stream even tried to smash the car window with an iron bar – unfortunately without success. The 54-year-old could only be saved after the fire brigade turned the car around. Unfortunately, she could no longer be helped, all attempts at resuscitation by an emergency doctor were to no avail. The injured 60-year-old was taken by ambulance to Braunau hospital. According to the police, summer tires were apparently mounted on the car.
