The Turkish second round is coming to an end, but Turks living in Austria can only vote until Wednesday. With them, Erdogan was clearly ahead in the first vote.
Turkish voters abroad can choose between incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the second round.
The results will be announced after the vote in Turkey on May 28. In Austria, about 108,000 Turkish citizens have the right to vote. You can vote since Saturday.
Erdogan is the favorite in the vote. In the first round on May 14, he was some 4.5 percentage points ahead of the CHP’s Kilicdaroglu, but lacked the necessary absolute majority. Turks abroad voted 57.70 percent for the incumbent party. Kilicdaroglu received almost 40 percent of the vote (see chart below).
Erdogan has had a clear lead in Austria lately
According to preliminary figures, nearly 72 percent of voters in Austria voted for Erdogan. The incumbent did particularly well in an international comparison.
By Tuesday afternoon, some 1.5 million people abroad had already voted. That is good for 46.3 percent of voters. In 2018, a total of 44.6 percent of eligible voters voted abroad. In the first round of the presidential elections, participation abroad was 49.4 percent higher than in 2018. There was only one vote at the time.
